My journey on earth began on April 28th 1980. I was born Nadia Mughal, and raised a Muslim girl living in Handsworth, in the city of Birmingham, England.
As a Muslim girl, when I told people I wanted to be a performer, I was never really encouraged to fulfill my desire. I was pushed towards subjects like Business studies, Law or Pharmacy, things that were stereotypically things that Asian (Indian) people did. But being who I am, I never live life by stereotypes. I’m the kind of girl that never fits into the box, I always think outside of it. I feel strongly about challenging stereotypes & people who judge by them.
I’m a ‘Lighter Shade of Dark’ (L.S.D). Originally that was gonna be my stage name, but I felt people who didn’t understand what that meant to me would just associate my name with the drug. Instead I became ‘addiKshun’.
I’m addicted to music & im hoping the music that I make will make people get addicted to me……. musically that is.
I started writing poetry in 1992/93 when I was 12/13. I then started writing RnB songs at 16, and performed at some talent shows to raise money for community projects. I went on to become a youth worker at the age of 18.
I started writing rap lyrics in 1998 & started performing my lyrics in 2002, but my hunger for the music only kicked in properly in March/April 2004. Since then I’ve recorded 7 potential tracks for my album. I released a 21 track Mix-cd, called ‘This Is Just An Introduction’ on November 25th 2004, which I’ve been promoting around Birmingham, The East Midlands, London, France, Spain & Miami. I’ve done live radio interviews both in Miami & here in the UK, and have tracks from the mix-cd being played on a number of radio stations.
P.a’s include performances at Birmingham’s well known venue ‘The Medicine Bar’, The Birmingham Conservatoire and community performances at the Arsites venue, Broadway and an exclusive performance of my latest release, ‘Show Me’ @ this Years Marcus Garvey event in Birmingham, not to mention recently performing for a rap group based in Miami called ‘Ampted Up’ for their single release party in Boca Raton, Florida. I’ve been out to the USA 4 times in the last year networking with people in the industry whilst working for a Miami based website “whatsupfortonite.com’ interviewing artists, D.j’s radio personalities & events/club promoters. I’ve featured in music videos and promotional material for rappers based in Miami.
At present I am juggling between my job as a Youth Worker, delivering Drama, Music, Creative writing & Money management workshops, and my music career. I play all the roles in my music career, from managing myself, to promotion, to networking, as well as finding time to concentrate on the artistic side of my career.
Apart from my involvement in the music industry as an artist, I also do promotional & marketing work for UK & USA based Artists, Record companies & Events Managers, Communications & Artist development for a local record company, and work as an Artist liaison managing tour dates for concerts/events based in the UK & Europe, for a London based Booking Agent that organize tours for American Hip-Hop artists. And if that wasn’t enough I recently started writing articles, reviews and interviews for a Birmingham based music magazine.
I see rap music and its lyrical content as a very powerful form of expression. That goes for all forms of art. Art allows people a sense of freedom to pretend to be something the ‘real’ world doesn’t allow them to be.
I’m hoping my music gives people an insight into me & expresses who I really am, as well as helping people realize that the best thing you can ever do in life is to be yourself and true to who u really are, regardless of what people might think about you. If you love who u are, that’s what counts & in time people will respect you for that.
Hip- Hop has so many different forms that I don’t really have a favorite rapper, but I have been inspired by many. From Jay Z to Busta Rhymes, Mobb Deep, Keith Murray, KRS One, Dre, Lil Kim and many more. Everybody is individual & they all have something different to say. That’s the beauty of hip –hop, artists can & will shape it to fit what best express’s them. & no doubt soon enough I can add some truly inspirational UK artists to my list because believe me there are some extremely talented rappers out here in the UK
